What is in a seat number?
"Excuse me please, kindly move. This is my seat ," boomed the voice of my 18 year old ,tall son, towering over a lady who seemed quite cosy in his aisle seat , when he boarded his flight to Chennai. With a smirk she replied , "We are all going to the same place. So what difference does it make!"
It took some time for him to convince her that though their destinations were the same , they have assigned seats. Finally she moved into the next seat.
On a recent trip to Karipur, I watched in consternation as the hapless steward tried to get everyone seated in their respective seats , to get the already delayed flight on air. The complaint was that seats allotted were scattered. And a family wanted to sit together even in the 3 hours short flight!!! A queue was building up behind them. In the meanwhile a few had already done the " adjustments" and seated themselves next to their friends or acquaintances. A lady was seen roaming around trying to find a vacant seat as hers was already taken up in "adjustment".Finally ,like answering the 'match the following questions' in my daughters question paper, the hapless steward did some matching and fixing and got the seat for her.
An excited gentleman (the hurray, i am going home , kind of excitement!) behind me quipped, " I can volunteer to stand up the whole flight , ask her to sit in my seat , so that we can go!
Seat numbers are given for a reason. In the event of an emergency or God forbid, a disaster, the authorities need to identify the passengers against their seat numbers. Weight distribution is another reason for seat allocation. But our dear vacationers just wont pay heed to any of this.
And in the meanwhile the announcements were warning the passengers not to use the mobiles or other electronic devices as the plane was being refuelled.Deaf ears , were not listening as they were busy on phone, telling God knows who about their departure and their itinerary for a month!
