Alka Yagnik and Udit Narayan on stage at Aviation Club,Dubai
"Hey ,would you like to come for the Udit Narayan show in Aviation club"..the phone call from my dearest friend was so unexpected .Udit...ofcourse i couldnt miss him .And then followed a mad rush of getting ready and running to be there on time .At the venue ,again ,unexpectedly i learned that Alka Yagnik is performing..How come such big stars were ascending and there were no prior ads in the media??
But the show, as if its mandatory, started late and with the compere blaming it all on the traffic."Hold on,We didnt see any traffic congestion" my friend quipped.Crowd was also getting restless when Deepa Narayan made the 'shubharambh " with "Vakrathunda mahakaya". Alka Yagniks cheerful and vivacious presence soon ushered in a mood of festivity. It was as if the stage was a second home to her.She exudes confidence and charm in all her actions and words."Tumhi Dekho Na" , "Laal Dupatta","Tauba"... oh, the melodies were endlessly flowing in her mellifluous voice. In between she was interacting freely with her audience fully feeling their pulse ,even conjuring up an imaginary Akbar Bhai in the crowd ..!!!!Amazing is her capacity, as she sang continuously for almost one and a half hours. What intrigues me was that she didnt have a music book or even a paper with the lyrics on it for reference. How can she remember all these songs?
Udit entered with his signature song "papa kehte hain" .The unforgetable hits "Pehla Nasha,"Jadoo teri nazar","Ruk Ja O Dil Deewane","Chand Chupa","Mitwaa" followed suit. The duest of Alka and Udit were enlivened by thier friendly banter and unassuming attitude, on stage. It was interesting to watch Udit encouraging Deepa and showering praises on her even when she faltered with her Tamil in "Sahana charal" from Shivaji.
Sunil Pal ,the stand up comedian, who shot into fame with his win in the Laughter challenge competition had us laughing to tears.I have never watched a live performance of a comedian of this genre ,so his performance was awe inspiring. How easily he was making the transition from one topic to the other!!
The final moments had fast numbers like "Om shanti om" and "Koi mil gaya".We had to reluctantly leave the scene though our minds were still fresh and asking for more.It was 1:30 am ,almost seven hours since i started from home and clock had really ticked fast.
